Muscle Team® is a unique, sports-themed event that pairs up professional athletes from Boston's best sports teams, sports legends, and local celebrities with children from the Greater Boston area who are living with a muscle-wasting disease. The concept of the event is that those with strong muscles help those with weak ones. The event has a fun, upbeat feel and focuses on making local children who live with muscular dystrophy feel like stars for the night. Muscle Team® 2011 was the largest to date, with 300 guests in attendance helping to raise $225,000.

The event raises funds for MDA’s free and fully-adaptive summer camp program for children with neuromuscular disease. This camp experience is unparalleled, and fosters independence, leadership, and self-awareness. Campers say the week they spend at MDA camp is “the best time of our lives.”

MDA camp is a magical place offering a wide range of activities specifically designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. MDA camp programs are structured to promote friendships, build self-confidence, and give campers an increased sense of ability and self-worth. Activities at MDA’s local summer camp, held each July at Camp Allen in Bedford, NH, include Field Day, Prank Day, Camper Olympics, Camp Prom, a magic show, swimming, basketball, softball, cookouts over the campfire, movie night under the stars, and more. Thousands of youngsters attend MDA camp each year at no cost to their families.

Funds raised through Muscle Team's® silent auction are vitally necessary to continuing MDA's promise one million Americans who are living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and one of 40+ other muscle diseases. MDA is the nation’s largest voluntary health agency aimed at finding treatments and cures for neuromuscular disease, and we are proud to offer a comprehensive portfolio of health care services through our network of 220 hospital-affiliated clinics as well as a nationwide loan closet of durable medical equipment that can be obtained and repaired at no cost, support groups for individuals and families, educational materials, and special programs designed to improve the quality of life for young adults.
